Dave Smith

Composer. Musician. Sound Designer. Synth-addict. Pop-Culture Curator. Electronic Pioneer. Geek.

Fascinated with the bubbling electronic sounds in the 1956 film Forbidden Planet, Dave’s formative years were spent listening to Moog Plays Bach, Kraftwerk and The Carpenters. Dave began experimenting with Casio synthesizers and tape loops in his early teens.

His eclectic music career spans two decades. As founding member of the Aria nominated Boxcar – one of Australia’s ground-breaking dance music outfits – Dave toured with New Order & Pet Shop Boys, collaborated with dance music luminaries such as Arthur Baker (New Order) & Francois K (Kraftwerk & Depeche Mode), released three international albums, & achieved three Top Ten US Billboard hits. Dave has also produced and remixed a diverse range of artists including; Severed Heads, The Models, Single Gun Theory & The Rockmelons.

Dave contributed to the success of two of Sydney’s largest film & tv sound studios, composing for TV dramas Water Rats & Murder Call and numerous award winning TVC’s. Now, as a founding partner of Groove Q, Dave creates powerful, award-winning music for film & television. Re-uniting with revolutionary label Volition Records in 2019, Boxcar’s debut album was remastered and remixed by a whole new generation, resulting in an iTunes #1 with the Antipodeans (Mark Dynamix) and remixes by Motorik techno supremo Francis Xavier and french label Fauve Records…re-igniting dancefloors and parties all over the globe. More recently Dave has been producing exclusive vinyl remixes and re-edits and DJ’ing himself!

Expert, intuitive, collaborative. Dave is renowned for his sonic fireworks, provocative sound aesthetics & world-class technical expertise.
